Singer/songwriter and guitarist Devon Gilfillian recently found his way home again, celebrating the release of his new album Love You Anyway with a trip to one of his favorite haunts, Charlie’s Hamburgers.

Gilfillian comes from Morton but for the past 10 years, he’s been living in Nashville, writes Dan DeLuca for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Gilfillian’s return to Delaware County included promotional stops at WXPN-FM (88.5) and Main Street Music in Manayunk, where he performed his new songs Friday night.

Now, though, he was enjoying a Peg Special at Charlie’s in Folsom—a double cheeseburger with bacon and onion.

“This is the spot,” he said. “This feels like home.”

His new album has serious moments but there’s a lightness to a lot of Gilfillian’s new music,

“Brown Sugar Queen,.” for example, is “an anthem to celebrate all the beautiful, thick, Black, and brown women in the world.” The song inspired Gilfillian to sell Brown Sugar Blend coffee on his website.

The album’s title cut highlights the belief that love can be a unifying force to overcome hate.

“I wanted to share that with this album, because there’s so much Black trauma in music and media and art,” Gilfillian said.
