Why it’s Important to Have Workplace Friendships

Having a good relationship with your co-workers is crucial for satisfaction in the workplace. Yet, only 20 percent of U.S. adults say they have workplace friendships, writes Jamie Ducharme for Time Magazine.

Psychologists say that positive work relationships can contribute overall to your well-being. Research states that higher job performance is also associated with having workplace friendships. It can also contribute to a longer lifespan.

Loneliness on the job can be associated with depression and other physical health problems.

While you don’t have to be best friends with your colleagues, even pleasant day-to-day interactions can contribute to an overall sense of belonging and help you cope with on-the-job stress.

The best ways to strengthen your relationships at work are to try to get to know them more by asking them an appropriate personal question in the break room, suggests Ducharme. Go out of your way to attend social events if your workplace has them.
