For World Champion Sisters, Baton Twirling Is Family Legacy
Downingtown sisters Sterling and Shay Busza, baton twirling world champions, followed in the footsteps of their mother, Alysha Busza, writes Melissa Kiebort for BVM Sports.
Alysha was four-years-old when she started twirling. She took to the sport with a passion and over the years started performing first individually and then with the highest nationally ranked team in Maryland.
One of her favorite memories is representing her country on the world level as a Nationalist twirler. She won several medals, including four gold at the NBTA World Championships in 2003, an achievement nobody else has yet to match.
After finishing her competitive career, she started coaching. She recognized the potential in her daughters, who started training at a young age as well. In 2019, the girls tried out for the World Championships competition as a duet. They won the nationals and found their place on Team USA.
However, the competition got postponed twice due to the pandemic, but they finally took to the stage in July 2022. They performed in perfect unison, which earned them the highest scores.
“It felt amazing hearing the National Anthem play when they announced “Busza and Busza” as the gold medalists,” said Alysha.
