A recent survey by SmartAsset puts Delaware County fourth best in the state for small business success, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

Locally it was bested only by Chester County, which placed first in the study.

Snyder County placed second best and Juniata County came in third.

“Delaware County’s performance was especially strong in the Small Business Returns category (No. 10 in the state), and the Small Business Income Category (No. 8), which helped propel them to the top 10 in the state on the overall index,” Steve Sabato, spokesman for SmartAsset, said.

The study used Internal Revenue Service data to calculate the small business presence in the county,

Delaware County small businesses experienced an average 21.31% return and income registered at 8.89%.

Nearby Chester County small businesses had an average 24.09% return with income at 9.82%.

In 2020, Delaware County was fifth best for small businesses with a 21.45 percent return and income at 9.04 percent.

Chester County was also first that year with a 24.65 percent return and 9.88 percent income.

This is the fifth SmartAsset survey since 2019 that looked at Pennsylvania county environments for small businesses.
