LaChelle Wong, was about 35 years old when an autoimmune condition caused inflammation in her corneas, slowly affecting her ability to see, writes Aaron Carter for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“I was staring at a screen, and then I couldn’t see it anymore,” she said.

Her vision stayed blurry for six months, sometimes going completely black. It still happens occasionally.

“It was a blessing in disguise,” she said. Her condition took her away from her corporate job and gave her a chance to travel the country with her son Isaiah.

Isaiah, a Bonner-Prendergast graduate, helped the Miami Hurricanes reach the Elite Eight and Final Four,

She attended every one of her son’s AAU tournaments and made every game when he was still in high school, dominating the Catholic League, and earning league MVP as a junior and senior.

Last month, Isaiah declared for the NBA draft and finished fourth on Miami’s all-time scoring list.

LaChelle was a superior player herself in high school softball and basketball.

The mother of four has become an inspiration to her children as they watched her cope with hard times.

“Just because something is hard doesn’t give you the right to give up,” said her son Terrence.
