A rare bronze Tibetan Buddha triggered a bidding frenzy at an online auction from Briggs Auction, Inc. in Garnet Valley that closed at a whopping $200,000.

It was the most money ever paid for one item at Briggs, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

The piece came from a Main Line estate and generated interest as soon as it was posted.

Bidders worldwide competed on the Briggs Auction platform and at Live Auction.com.

“What made this Buddha so special? It was right, and of exceptional quality,” said Stephen Turner, president and owner of Briggs. “The figure was unusually large at 13 inches tall, and very heavy. The underside of the statue bore a Yongle mark, which added to its historical significance. And the piece’s nearly excellent condition certainly added to its value.”

The figure shows a serene-faced seated Buddha wearing a draped robe in quiet contemplation, It is making a vitarka mudra with his right hand, a common hand gesture in Buddha statuary.

Other well-bid items included a portrait titled Lorelei that went for $32,000, a large set of Georg Jensen sterling flatware and serving pieces that sold for $6,000, and a rare Thomas Crow signed pocket watch that went for $5,500.
