A woman unable to leave Mexico since 2021 was reunited with her Yeadon family Wednesday ending her legal limbo nightmare, writes Valerie Russ for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

There were tears of joy and hugs as Karen Serrano Roberts joined up with her husband, LaMar, and her five children and mother at Philadelphia International Airport.

Roberts, 32, was trapped by immigration legalities after a lawyer advised her in 2021 she should return to Mexico to apply for her green card.

While In Mexico she discovered because she was brought to the United States from Mexico without legal documents at age 4 she would have to wait 10 years before she could apply to reenter the United States.

The devastated family wrote letters to President Joe Biden, Sen. Bob Casey and others and started a Change.org petition to expedite a waiver request and let Karen return home.

On March 23, the waiver was granted, allowing Karen to remain in the United States with her family.

“I feel like a family circle that has been broken is finally back together again,” said LaMar Robert’s mother, Roselee Roberts. “The love that he had for her was stronger than his struggles.”
