Teenager Raises Funds to Fight Cancer While Waiting for Own Heart Transplant

By

Matthew Hauser, a 16-year-old Malvern resident, is not letting his own struggle with health prevent him from continuing to raise funds to fight cancer, writes Matteo Iadonisi for 6ABC

Hauser is currently hoping to get a lifesaving call that will tell him there is a heart available for him.

“When I was two and a half, I was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma and I was in treatment for a year and I went into remission,” said Hauser.

But recently he went into heart failure, and had a heart pump installed in his chest. Now, to keep himself alive, he must carry a 10-pound bag filled with batteries and a monitor with him all the time. Last week, he found out he will need a heart transplant.

Even while navigating these challenges, Hauser is still working on raising funds to fight cancer in a special annual campaign run by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The campaign, which is titled “Student Visionaries of the Year,” challenges kids from all over the country to earn the top title by raising the most funds.

“It would mean the world to me just to bring awareness to this cause,” said Hauser.
