Keith Atherholt grew up in Delaware County but the forests have always called to him, reports Morning AgClips.

“… [I] became enamored with the Smokey the Bear commercials at the time. I was intrigued by the thought of managing a large area of forest,” he said.

Today, Altherholt is president of Lewis Lumber Products out of Picture Rocks, Pennsylvania.

Atherholt grew up with no forest or hunting experience, just fishing in local streams.

By the time he graduated Penn State University, he had a degree in Wood Products. In 1991, he joined Lewis Lumber Products.

The company is a hardwood lumber distributor, supplying cabinet and furniture makers and mill workers in the Mid-Atlantic.

Hardwood lumber is a “byproduct of the forest” and “it is the only renewable and sustainable natural resource building material out there,” Altherholt said.

His love of the forest continues, as shown in the stewardship approach his company takes in acquiring lumber.

“Today, there is more forest growing than there were 50 years ago. On an annual basis, there is a net gain each year in forest growth over-harvesting. This industry has always been ‘green friendly’”, he said.
