Episcopal Academy Boys Track & Field Team on National Stage

By

The Episcopal Academy’s Boys Track & Field team in Newtown Square has risen to the national stage after winning its first-ever state championship last month, writes Renee Washington for 6abc.

Freshman Abaas Hunter took first place in the freshman 400m at the New Balance Nationals March 9, setting a new school record of 49.52.

On March 10, Episcopal Academy’s distance medley relay of Aidan McHugh, Abaas Hunter, Dakin Emmeyer, and Michael Woolery took the national championship at Nike Indoor Nationals.

The team’s time of 10:08:93 was the third fastest in the country.

On March 11, AJ Koukou threw the shot put and Michael Woolery competed in the 800m.

And on March 12, in the 4X800m relay, Michael Woolery secured a silver medal.

Topping off the season was Coach Zach Richards, who was named Coach of the Year by MileSplitPA.

The success is a testament to the team’s hard work to overcome challenges that included Zoom practices during the COVID-19 pandemic and falling just short of a state championship last season.

“We knew we had something special and then it just culminated this year,” said Coach Jim Farrell.
