Father Joseph Coffey, a graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School was named a new auxiliary bishop by Pope Francis for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, writes Robert Moran for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

His responsibilities include overseeing Catholic priests serving as chaplains around the world.

Coffey was previously the assistant chief of staff for the religious ministry at the Marine Corps Recruit Depo in San Diego.

After attending high school in Delaware County, the bishop-elect graduated from La Salle University. He then spent time as a grade-school teacher, a ski instructor in Switzerland, and in the automobile industry in Belgium and Germany.

He went on to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained in 1996 and became an associate pastor at St. Katherine of Siena parish in Philadelphia.

During his time in the seminary, Coffey entered the U.S. Navy Chaplain Candidate Program. He first served in the Navy Reserves and became full-time active duty as a Navy chaplain 18 years ago. He has served around the globe, from Cape May to Japan to the Arabian Gulf to Afghanistan.
