Edgmont Rejects Planned Elementary School, Rose Tree Regroups
With Edgmont’s unanimous rejection of a planned elementary school at Route 352, the Rose Tree Media School District says it’s reviewing options, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.
The supervisors cited infrastructure and traffic issues at the site and said it would have an adverse impact on the township.
School district officials were disappointed by Edgmont’s decision to reject plans for a school on 37 acres at 1501 Middletown Road.
“We’re all eager to find a way to work together to resolve this,” said Ken Dinitz, school board vice president. “But we really have a responsibility to the kids and families as well as the taxpayers to find a solution.”
Rose Tree Media has no elementary school north of Route 1 to serve the northern half of the district where houses are being built and the population is growing fastest, officials said.
The district vetted 23 potential sites over a number of years.
Two other sites are possible, one on West Chester Pike near a supermarket and the other at the former Sleighton property, but neither owner was interested in talking with the district.
The district needs the new Edgmont elementary school to ease overcrowding at existing schools.
