From intimate performances in neighborhood bars to giant amphitheaters and sports arenas, there’s no shortage of concert venues in the Philadelphia region, including the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, writes Pierre Robert for WMMR.

The Tower Theater is among the 10 largest Philly region concert venues put together by WMMR.

It was sixth,  with a capacity of 3,100 concert-goers.

Since the former movie theater emerged as a concert hall in 1972, it has hosted some of the greatest rock musicians of all time.

Its reputation as a respectable concert hall was solidified when David Bowie recorded Live at the Tower in 1974.

Paul Simon and Neil Young also recorded live albums there.

When the first concert opened at the Tower in early summer 1972, the show was sold out.  A Philadelphia Daily News reviewer wrote, “Philly finally has its Filmore,” referring to the Filmore East in New York, according to the Tower Theatre website.

The Tower stage in its early years hosted Peter Gabriel and Genesis, while Bruce Springsteen introduced the E Street Band at the Tower in 1974.

Since then, the Tower has hosted thousands of performers, from U2 to the Rolling Stones, to Bob Dylan.

CBS Philadelphia covered the removal of the Tower sign.
