Medical facilities in the Philadelphia region, including Prosthetic Innovations in Eddystone, are helping grievously wounded Ukrainian soldiers because of the quality of medical care here and because the region hosts a large Ukrainian population, writes Jeff Gammage for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Soldier Roman Horodenskyi lost a left leg and right arm back in April 2022 during the war in Ukraine. He’s come to Prosthetic Innovations in Eddystone for treatment.

He’s hoping a device available from the specialists will let him return to his military career and lead a normal life.

It’s a specialized artificial arm controlled by signals fired from the muscles that remain in his shoulder.

Prosthetic Innovations is treating many war veterans like Horodenskyl.

Though studies show that modern prosthetic arms provide about half the function and control of a real arm, Horodenskyl is optimistic.

“Better plastic and metal than nothing,” he said.

Prosthetics in Ukraine are less advanced and hard to get.

He received his prosthetic leg in Florida in early September before making the trip to Philadelphia.

Some of those treated in this country have gone back to fighting in Ukraine and some have died in combat.
