The Delaware County community is keeping one grandmother, Galyna Grigoriyevna, in yarn and helping to deliver gloves and socks to orphans and soldiers in Ukraine, writes Madeleine Wright for CBS Philadelphia.

Every Christmas, Paul Kostyukov from Springfield presents a gift of yarn to his grandmother, Galyna Grigoriyevna.

This year, though, was extra special.

“I’m moving this year to Florida, so I can’t give her any more yarn in the future because it’s going to be way too much, so, I want to give her enough yarn for a lifetime,” Kostyukov said.

His grandma decided to knit gloves and socks to send to Ukraine, using 3,000 bundles of yard Kostyukov was able to collect after posting a message to Facebook asking for donations.

“I spent quite a lot of weekends driving around Delaware County just going to different houses collecting yarn,” Kostyukov said.

Grigoriyevna’s mission for Ukraine is not new. For the last four or five years, she’s knitted socks and gloves for Ukraine, her birth nation.

With the war, she decided to add refugees and soldiers to her gift list.

With attacks on Ukraine’s power grid, the items will provide vital warmth this winter.
