Dr.Trout, a Springfield doctor who died from the Springfield Mall attacks of 1985 was remembered recently when an anonymous donor gave $15,000 for emergency equipment to Springfield police, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

E. Earl Trout was a beloved physician injured Oct. 30, 1985 when Sylvia Seegrist, who suffered from a mental health disorder, shot and killed two people at the mall.

Eight others were wounded, including Dr. Trout who died a month later.

Springfield police used the donation to buy an automated license plate reader and to equip two tactical team members with ballistic armor.

The ALPR reads license numbers of vehicles that pass police cars and alerts police if the car is stolen or the operator wanted, said Police Chief Joseph Daly.

“We are very grateful for the generous donation,” Daly said. “As time has proven, it will certainly be a beneficial tool for our community.”

Trout was a Korean vet who served in the Navy as medical officer aboard the USS Sierra AD-18.

Dr. Trout started a medical practice after moving to Springfield with his family.

He was a longtime member of the Springfield Rotary Club District #745 and served as District Governor from 1969-1970.
