Terry Toohey has a unique perspective on the Delco attitude and Delco sports, having worked as a sports writer and editor for the Delaware County Daily Times since 1981, writes Matt Leon for KYW Newsradio.

Toohey is the assistant sports editor for the Daily Times.

“Delco kind of has its own vibe,” Toohey said. “I don’t hear people saying they’re proud to be from Montgomery County, or Bucks County, or Chester County, but people in Delco … they take great pride. There’s Delco flags and shirts, things like that.”

Toohey‘s writing was noticed when he was a student at Cardinal Dougherty High School but it was at the Community College of Philadelphia where it took off.

A friend who was a sports editor at Vanguard asked if was interested in writing.

“I said sure, and that’s kind of how it all started.”

His first journalism job at the Philadelphia Inquirer was answering phones and taking high school game results.

In his third year, he got his first assignment, covering a Catholic League baseball playoff game.

“It took me a while to become a better writer. And you’re always as a writer, you’re always improving, you always want to improve.”
