Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker is only the third Black manager to ever win a World Series, writes Clinton Yates for ANDSCAPE.

Baker’s perseverance to come out on top and his positive influence on young men and their families brought a lot of supporters to the games.

Ben Somorjai grew up playing baseball with Baker’s son Darren in the Bay Area.

Somorjai went on to play Division III baseball at Haverford College and still lives in the area.

“I mean, this is such a representation. Look how many people are here with him, who care about him. Just one of the greatest humans on the face of the earth and I couldn’t be happier for the guy,” Somorjai said.

Then there was Bert Brown, who, with his family’s support, skipped his daughter’s baptism and his aunt’s birthday party to see Baker at the game.

“I’m a kid in a candy store. I grew up H-town, all things H-town we do. And it was just like one of the most amazing things ever in my life. Now I rank it: married to my wife, having kids, World Series. That’s it.”
