It is time for Diwali, the Festival of Lights.

Indians from around the world began the festival Oct. 24, a five-day event that celebrates the triumph of good over evil.

Locally, a celebration will take place Friday, Nov. 4, at the Park Avenue Community Center in Swarthmore during a Fall Family First Friday event, writes Priyanka Tewari for WHYY.

Allison DiSalvo, the host, and curator of the Fall Family First Friday discovered the Diwali holiday while talking with someone from India while she was the children’s programmer at Swarthmore Public Library.

DiSalvo’s been on a mission to share the beautiful things that people celebrate so this holiday was perfect to bring to the community.

The event will include classical dance performances that will tell a story through dance and gestures.

It will be led by participating Indian artist Rinal Parikh.

There will also be a live music demonstration on the tabla.

People will have a chance to create a community rangoli, a welcoming, colorful design usually put on the front door to invite Goddess Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth, when she comes to bless the house.

“It’s about bringing people together and experiencing that sense of inclusion,” DiSalvo said.
