Tyce Combs, owner of Generations Barber School at 6830 Market Street in Upper Darby, is fighting gun violence the best way he can, by being a welcoming presence in the community, especially for the youth, writes Racquel Williams for KYW Newsradio.

Open since 2006, his shop is the only barber academy in Delaware County. It is also a community hub for Upper Darby’s youth.

“I’ve been doing as much as I can to be an example and be a positive light for younger Black males that are coming up in this area,” Combs said.

He remembers how the community embraced him when he came to Upper Darby.

“In fact, I opened up a music studio here, because I wanted to focus on some of the inner-city youth from this area, to give them something to do, because there were no recreational centers.”

Generations Barber School includes a Generations Community Square where kids work the summer selling water ice, ice cream and other refreshments.

The idea is to keep them out of trouble. Right now, Combs is running an anti-gun violence initiative at his shop.

On Wednesdays young people are encouraged to put their guns down and start conversations.
