The U.S. Congress has allocated $1 million for safety upgrades at a unique crossing in Darby that accommodates freight trains, trolleys, motor vehicles and pedestrian traffic, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

The Sixth and Main streets safety project was announced Monday by U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa).

The intersection was the scene of a trolley/train accident Dec. 9.  Six people were injured when a SEPTA trolley hit a CSX train.

Two roads, pedestrians and a SEPTA trolley line all intercept a major interstate freight line. There are trolley stops on both sides of the intersection.

Nearly 300 trolleys pass the crossing every day.

The project will improve the roadways, sidewalks, pedestrian crossings, and warning devices. There will be new traffic signals and crossing gates. Work is expected to start soon.

“This $1 million will make the rail crossing safer, to prevent injuries, god help us even deaths, will be the kind of investment this region and this community has a right to expect, it will also help our kids get to school safer and get people to and from work safer, so this is a good day,” Casey said.
