Delaware County figures it has to update its 10-year Municipal Waste Management Plan anyway so it might as well kick it up a notch, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.

Its minimum obligation under state law (Act 101) is to identify long-term trash disposal methods.

But Delco’s decided to aim for getting its trash waste to zero, focusing on recycling, composting, reducing, and reusing.

And it wants the public’s help.

It is inviting residents, businesses, and community organizations to three public workshops to shape a new plan. The public can attend online or in person.

Those interested in attending or finding out more can register here or visit delcopa.gov/workshops.

All workshops start at 6 p.m. The first is this evening in the Upper Darby Township Sellers Memorial Library. The second is May 26 at Norwood Public Library. The third is June 30 at Ridley Township Public Library.

“When we talk about zero waste, it’s really zero waste or darn close. If you think about what all we generate, there will still be some materials that we’ll have to dispose either at landfills or incinerators, but we can get really close to zero waste,” said Ruth Abbe, with Zero Associates, a consultant for Delaware County.
