Wawa retooled the marketing around its Mint Matcha shakes (which happen to be green), offering them on a special St. Patrick’s Day menu, which kind of puts them in competition with McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes, writes the Billy Penn staff for Billy Penn.

So which one tastes better?

Billy Penn decided to try a side-by-side taste comparison Wednesday and report the results.

They ordered 19 milkshakes from Wawa and McDonald’s.

Aside from the obvious problem so many shakes in one place created, the newsroom did provide a varied review.

Deputy Editor Bea Forman pointed out that McDonald’s provided straws and free whipped cream.

Editor Dayna Henninger described the Wawa’s shake as “INTENSE”.  Both editors described it as tasting like a green cloud sprinkled with dirt, while reporter Jordan Levy said it was “surprisingly good.”

Danya felt the Shamrock shake tastes like toothpaste whipped cream and leaves a slime coating in the throat. Development and Engagement Manager Jessica deRivera added it’s more like creamy mouthwash closer to the bottom.

Jess felt the Shamrock shake color is probably more fun to look at on psychedelics.

Final tally?  Two votes for the Shamrock, three votes for the Wawa Mint Matcha.
