Career Corner: 7 Apps to Help You Focus and Block Distractions at Work

Despite your best efforts, maybe you just can’t help but wind up getting distracted during times when you have something important to get done. You don’t have to manage it all on your own, though.

If you want help tuning out unimportant things for a while, there are apps for that. Zapier did a round-up of some of the best apps, and here is a breakdown of some of the best perks for each one.

Freedom

The great thing about Freedom is it can work on all of your devices simultaneously. That way you can’t cheat by blocking social media on your phone but still taking a peek while on your computer.

Serene

This app takes it a bit further than just blocking out distracting sites. Additionally, Serene lets you list your schedule, how long each item will need, and can even play relaxing music while you are working.

Cold Turkey Blocker

Cold Turkey Blocker is a bit more intense for those who feel tempted to cheat when blocking distractions. This one can block sites on all browsers, not just the one you set it upon. You can’t even get around the lockout by changing the computer’s time, ensuring you stay committed.

LeechBlock NG

Perhaps one of the best things about LeechBlock NG is that it is free. The others listed so far often have trial periods, but eventually, require you to start paying for them.

RescueTime

RescueTime not only blocks distracting sites but also functions as a time management app, so you can see how long you are spending on programs and sites.

Forest

Forest turns your self-control into a game. As its name suggests, it shows a tree growing on your phone, but the tree will only survive if you go the distance in lasting through the timer you set on your phone. Maybe your competitive instincts will be the motivation you need.

SelfControl

SelfControl is the simplest-looking option, but also the most extreme. Once you set the timer, nothing turns it off except letting it run out or reinstalling your operating system. You can’t bypass it by deleting it or restarting the computer, so you have to go the distance.

Each of these apps has its pros and cons, so check out the ones that interest you to see how they compare and best suit your needs.
