The newly renovated Orchid House at Longwood Gardens will reopen its doors to visitors on Saturday, Feb. 26, after a year of being closed for remodeling, writes Stephan Salisbury for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Orchard House is a bit of Longwood that is “grounded in the legacy of our founder” Pierre S. du Pont, said Paul B. Redman, CEO of Longwood Gardens.

The opening of the Orchard House represents a small but significant milestone in the most extensive renovation and construction project in the history of Longwood Gardens.

The Orchid House covers around 1,400 square feet in total, which is tiny in the scope of the entire 17-acre project with its total price tag of $250 million.

However, it hints at what is yet to come, as onsite refurbs are projected to continue to the end of 2024.

The remodeled Orchid House sports a new glass roof, new and restored display cases, and restored bronze windows. It will have around 300 orchids on display on reopening day, and that number will grow over time, according to Greg Griffis, senior horticulturist, orchid expert, and curator of the exhibit.
