Demolition is taking place at the former FMC/American Viscose property in Marcus Hook to make way for a planned 475,000 square foot warehouse complex, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

The 30-acre property has been subject to false starts on redevelopment for decades.

Now the remaining building is coming down to make way for the warehouse.

Borough Manager Andrew Weldon called it an exciting time for the property.  Most of the structures have been there since the late 1970s, he said.

The new development has been conditionally approved by borough council. A land development plan will be completed within the year.

A sale of the property to Duke Realty was finalized in December. Keith Meehan, senior project manager said the company expects to be a permanent fixture in town.

The new buildings will be LEED sustainable, environmentally focused and fully sprinklered.

Meehan said he hopes borough residents will be able to find jobs at the new warehouse.

American Viscose Company manufactured artificial rayon silk in the early 20th century at the property. It was later owned by FMC Corporation. .

A three-alarm fire struck in November at one of the buildings being demolished. No one was injured.
