Wawa continues to inch further west in Pennsylvania, encroaching into Sheetz country, writes Sue Gleiter for pennlive.com, as reported in lehighvalleylive.com.

A Wawa store has been proposed at a retail and residential development in Mount Joy Township, east of Elizabethtown in Lancaster County.  It will join other Wawa stores that have already opened in Lancaster and Berks County.

The developer, Pennmark Management Company, Inc., says it has signed a lease with Wawa for a 5,000 square-foot site.

Sheetz and Wawa have had a largely friendly battle for dominance in Pennsylvania.

Rumors that the two signed a gentleman’s agreement to not encroach on each other’s territory have been unfounded.

Sheetz, based in Altoona and Wawa, in Delaware County, have been building stores along the Lancaster and Berks county lines. Sheetz still dominates the Harrisburg region.

“Usually when you see stores go into someone else’s backyard there might be a certain amount of ego involved,” Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores in Alexandria, Virginia, told Penn Live earlier this year. “The people who run both of those companies are really smart. If there is a good business reason to do it, it absolutely makes sense.”
