Wawa Is Tops in PA for Revenue Among Private Firms, 29th in the Nation
From humble beginnings in Delaware County, Wawa has now grown into the largest privately owned company in Pennsylvania based on revenue.
It is the 29th largest privately owned company in the country, according to Forbes, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.
It was one of six Pennsylvania firms that made the top 100 on Forbe’s list of America’s Largest Private Companies.
Wawa pulled pretty far ahead of its state convenience store rival, Sheetz, which was listed as the 75th largest privately-owned company in the nation and Pennsylvania’s third largest.
The Pittsburgh-based grocery chain Giant Eagle was second in the state and 36th nationally.
The companies on Forbes’ list had revenue greater than $2 billion as of the most recent fiscal year.
Wawa actually dropped down six places from last year’s No. 23 ranking due to a 15% decrease in revenue for 2020. The chain, which employs about 38,000 people sold $11 billion in products in its most recent fiscal year.
Sheetz, with 20,200 workers, had about $5.6 billion in revenue last year.
Six of the 11 Pennsylvania companies on this year’s list are in western Pennsylvania.
