Democrats maintained the status quo on Delaware County Council following Tuesday’s election, with incumbent Democrat Kevin Madden and newcomer Democrat Richard Womack winning council seats, according to unofficial election results, writes Rodrigo Torrejon for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Republicans Frank Agovino and Joseph Lombardo Jr. ended up falling behind their Democratic opponents by more than 1% in the final unofficial tally.

Madden called the win “a pretty clear affirmation of the progress we’ve made over these past few years.”

”I think it really is an endorsement of the change we’ve effectuated over the last few years,” Madden said. “The voters of Delaware County wanted to turn the page on the old way of doing things, and they have appreciated the openness we’ve brought to county government.”

Council Chairman Brian Zidek opted not to seek re-election this year, opening a path for Womack to take his seat.  Womack had previously run in 2015 but was defeated.

The Democrats wrestled two seats from the Republicans in 2017 and were able to take the remaining seats on county council following the 2019 election after a century of Republican control.

Council members are elected to four-year terms.
