While degrees and higher education certainly have their value, sometimes the best experience is getting to try things for yourself. That is why the Wolf administration is promoting the importance of apprenticeship programs for Pennsylvania workers.

A recent press release from the Wolf administration highlights this initiative, specifically pointing to the Finishing Trades Institute (FTI) as one of the many local options Pennsylvanians have. Some of the apprenticeship choices they offer include drywall finishing, glasswork, and applying coatings and paints for coverings.

In commenting on the importance of this cause, Pennsylvania Apprenticeship and Training Office Director Tara Loew said, “Ensuring that businesses have the qualified workers they need and that employees are prepared for the jobs of today is a top priority of the Wolf Administration.” Loew went on to say, “Registered apprenticeship programs, like the one at FTI, allow commonwealth workers to remain gainfully employed while learning valuable skills and completing their education.”

That last point is one that the Wolf administration wants to stress. These apprenticeships are not simply expressing a need that companies have, but also an avenue that offers incentives to the workers to pursue such work. That can be a difference-maker for people who might not be able to become involved in certain other career paths due to the time or cost involved.

With there simultaneously being a labor shortage as well as many people out of work right now, apprenticeships might be the answer some workers have been looking for. Learning a sought-after trade that pays well could be the change in direction that helps some Pennsylvanians get back on track.

Created in early 2016, the Department of Labor & Industry’s Apprenticeship Training Office supports 873 individual program sponsors and 1,587 registered apprenticeship programs, occupation or trade additions across the commonwealth, with 17,483 active registered apprentices.
