Delaware County reached another milestone at the end of September when nearly three-fourths of eligible Delaware County residents became fully vaccinated for COVID-19, writes Pete Bannan for the Daily Times.

For people 65 and older, the vaccination rate is 90 percent fully vaccinated.

The figure does not include children 12 and under.

“The more people who are immunized, the better off we will be going into the respiratory season, “said Delaware County Medical Advisor Dr. Lisa O’Mahony.  “The chances of being hospitalized or dying once you are vaccinated are very low.”

Delaware County still remains a high transmission risk situation, though some variables are trending down, O’Mahony said.

“We really need to still be on guard.”

There were 583 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the county in the past seven days, she said.  In the week before that, it was 549 new cases.

The incident rates are slightly up in Delaware County, at 102.9 per 100,000. Delaware County can only lose its high transmission rate status when category cases drop below 100 cases per 100,000 population.

The unvaccinated have higher mortality and morbidity rates, and are the largest group spreading the virus, O’Mahony said.
