Temple Lutheran Church in Havertown has installed a solar array on its roof large enough to offset 100 percent of its annual electricity usage.
It’s expected the new array will eliminate 24 tons of carbon emissions annually.
It was made possible through the church’s environmental committee and through the Solarize Delco program.
The 44 kW, grid-tied array is the largest so far in Delaware County under the Solarize Delco program.
There will be a ribbon-cutting with congregants and government officials to launch the array on July 28, 11 a.m., at the church property, 501 Brookline Blvd.
Solarize Delco is an all-volunteer program founded in 2019 encouraging the local use of solar power.
Neighbors who have already installed solar power guide neighbors through the process. They can connect potential users with vetted contractors who provide below-market bulk purchasing pricing.
To date, Solarize Delco is responsible for over 25 installations in Delaware County, providing over 254 kW of solar energy.
Solarize can also provide advice to non-profits and link them to other organizations like the Clean Energy Coop to help them overcome the tax code’s financial disadvantages government and non-profit organizations have when implementing solar.
