There’s a gaga pit out at Aronimink Swim Club in Drexel, thanks to Max McGovern and his quest to earn Eagle Scout status, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

McGovern, 15, belongs to Boy Scout Troop 144 in Havertown. He’s been a Scout since he was 7. The gaga pit is his service project to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

McGovern is a sophomore at Malvern Preparatory School.

Gaga is a form of dodge ball played in an octagon-shaped pit. It’s popular at nearby swim clubs and schools.

McGovern was required to plan, develop and lead a project that benefits the community.

He received help from his fellow Scouts at Troop 144, along with his uncle Ted McGovern, a union carpenter; and other friends and family.

The $2,600 project was built May 15 in eight hours.

Beatty Lumber & Millwork Company in Upper Darby, Home Depot and Lowe’s donated materials.  Brother’s Pizza & Restaurant in Drexel Hill kept the volunteers fed.

McGovern says it “feels great,” seeing how much entertainment the pit is providing.

Besides Scouting, McGovern swims for Aronimink, Malvern Prep and the Lansdowne YMCA Marlins.
