Tim Seifert, senior VP at Lincoln Financial Group in Radnor, appreciates his “truly amazing mother,” Barbara Lou, he writes for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

His mother entered the Montgomery Hospital registered nurse program right out of high school. She took on a second job to make ends meet while raising three boys.

They grew up strong and smart in their Norristown home, thanks to her strength, love and optimism.

There are three examples she set.

Be a nurse. “Boys, my patients are looking for a miracle. If it can be just for one moment or one hour, I look to be their miracle.” That’s what she told her boys every morning.

Helping others get what they need, want or desire is a valuable lesson that helped his career.

Be a baker. Every weekend, she makes 25 to 35 packets of chocolate chip cookies, ready to dispense as needed.

“The presence of anxiety is unavoidable, the prison of anxiety is optional,”  she would say.

Be last to leave the table because the best is yet to come.  That sense of optimism helped her raise three boys and put smiles on the faces of people she met.
