A 78-year-old Media woman is behind a subtle name change for an immigration center in Philadelphia.

The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians is now The Welcoming Center, writes Jeff Gammage for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

There’s also a new logo and a color tint as an homage to the founder’s roots.

“I advocated for a little bit of green in it,” joked Anne O’Callaghan.

O’Callaghan created the center in 2003 after coming here from County Monaghan, Ireland. “There’s no harm to remember where you came from.”

The new name and logo refocus the center’s core mission—helping immigrant arrivals with work, entrepreneurial and business language skills. Also, to engage with the larger community as they create new lives in America.

The Philadelphia-based center philosophy is that making Pennsylvania a magnet for newcomers will make the state more competitive in the global economy.

O’Callaghan remembers her own difficulty adjusting, even though she spoke English, because the culture and parlance were so different.

She was also barred from taking the state licensing exam in physical therapy because she was foreign-trained.

She created the center as a central resource where immgrants could get information on language classes and business start0ups. The goal would be to help them find jobs.
