Haverford College’s Baseball Team has Been an MLB Champion Behind the Scenes
Think Major League Baseball, and Haverford College doesn’t spring to mind, writes Matt Breen for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
But in the last 20 years, the school’s Division III baseball team has been a feeder to the big leagues.
Fifteen major league teams have employed the college’s alum for their front offices.
Some of baseball’s biggest contracts have been negotiated by agents who played at Haverford.
The college has only had one player, Bill Lindsay, play in the majors, back in 1911 for the Cleveland Naps.
But they’ve fielded great agents and executives.
“When you go to a place like Haverford, you got in there because your academic nature is to be inquisitive,” said Ed Molush, Haverford’s head baseball coach from 1992-2000. “These players were not the kind of guys who sat in their classrooms quietly.”
Haverford College’s baseball team has helped build World Series champions and playoff teams.
Ron Shapiro has been an agent for more Hall of Fame players than anyone else. He played at Haverford in the 1960s.
Arn Tellem was at Haverford in the 1970s. He represented Chase Utley and was the chief operating officer for Major League Baseball.
