Brookhaven School Goes Virtual for Last Days Following Major Gas Spill Nearby
A major gas spill in Brookhaven is disrupting some end-of-year school activity at Coebourn Elementary School in Brookhaven, reports Corey Davis for 6abc.com.
Students will end the last three days of the school year virtually as gasoline odors and cleanup efforts continue at and near the school. The school building is closed.
A kindergarten graduation Wednesday morning took place in a municipal building across the street.
Anywhere between 4,000 to 4,500 gallons of fuel spilled after a delivery Friday night at a Gas-N-Go at Coebourn Blvd. and Edgmont Ave.
Emergency crews are making sure the spill doesn’t end up in Brookhaven’s smaller waterways, particularly after Monday’s heavy rains.
“Some of the fuel was higher up on the banks, so it washed down as it came in,” said Tim Boyce, Delaware County Emergency Services Director.
The fuel is contained to streams and retention ponds. The goal is to keep it out of nearby Chester Creek and/or the Delaware River.
Dead fish, fowl and foxes have been found in the contaminated area.
“Obviously, this was not a minor event. It was a catastrophic release,” Boyce said.
An investigation is under way.
