Two lifelong friends who went to high school together in Delaware County have opened Rowhome Coffee in Philadelphia, writes Laura Smythe for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The café was recently opened at 26th and Pine Street by Hugh Moretta and Eli Shaika.

Morretta has 10 years of experience in the coffee industry and came in second in the 2019 U.S. Roaster Championship.  He manages single-origin coffees with La Colombe’s “Workshop” product line.

He frequently travels to South and Central America searching for coffee sources for La Colombe.  It is those brews that are offered at Rowhome, with a rotating single-origin pour over and drip coffee option.

Shaika brings 20 years of experience in the music industry.

They decided on a coffee shop after considering a restaurant or a BBQ food truck after participating in rib cooking competitions.

Opening in a pandemic has brought a sense of caution to the business partners.

“In this time you need to be a lot more cautious and a lot more conservative with your funding and your ability to go with a potential lapse in the ability for customers to come inside and being able to be open,” Shaika said.
