On Sept. 18, Delaware County employees stood outside the Media Courthouse to demonstrate the importance of wearing a mask.

A third of Delaware County employees are paid below market averages with magisterial court employees earning the lowest comparable wage.

Two-thirds are at or above market averages, writes Kathleen E. Carey for the Daily Times.

In December 2019, McGrath Human Resources Group looked at the compensation given to county and court employees.

The study was authorized after County Sheriff Jerry L. Sanders Jr. petitioned council in October 2018 to increase his deputies’ salaries because he was having trouble retaining and recruiting deputies.

The market data showed about 36 percent of Delaware County’s employees’ salaries were either below or about to fall below market averages. About 64 percent were in an acceptable range.

The study did not include salaries at the Fair acres Geriatric Center or the George W. Hill Correctional Facility.

“In some cases people thought they were grossly underpaid and yet, in the market data, we found they were being paid at market or above,” said County Human Resources Director James Kane.

The analysis includes a recommendation that the county create a salary structure with a step system for union and non-union workers. Also, job descriptions need to be updated and performance reviews given.
