Widener Nursing Students Will Help With Mass Vaccinations

By

More than 150 nursing students at Widener University are stepping up to help administer COVID-19 vaccines, reports Bob Brooks for 6abc.com.

The Citizen Corps of Delaware County put out the call, saying it needs volunteers to handle the huge volume of vaccines being given out.

“We are definitely honored for sure. This is something that has truly shaken us all to our core,” said Gabrielle Smyser, a senior nursing student at Widener University.

The Widener seniors and juniors have already been trained, vaccinated and are standing by to help when mass vaccinations start.

The Citizens Corps says it has hundreds of volunteers but recruitment is ongoing, because volunteers are still needed for the monumental task ahead.

Ed Kline with the Delaware County Emergency Managements is coordinating the recruitment effort.

“To the local nurse and to the local medical professional, it’s their community asking them for help and they can do that in just a couple hours a week or several hours a week,” said Kline.

Dr. Anne Krouse, the dean of the Widener School of Nursing, says the students are excited because it lets them go out and be a nurse.
