Holiday Greeting Cards Give Prisoners a Chance to Connect With the Outside

Prisoners at Delaware County’s George W. Hill Correctional facility will be able to write to people on the outside for the holidays, writes Kenny Cooper for WHYY.org.

The Delaware County Coalition for Prison Reform  recently delivered more than 1,000 greeting cards.

“This is a lifeline, because it allows people to reconnect in a way that is very easy,” said Jacquie Jones, an attorney on the leadership team for DelcoCPR. “And it allows people to start forming relationships before they get out of jail, and we’re hoping that we can just sort of cause families to have more connection.”

It’s particularly difficult for the incarcerated to communicate with family and friends, especially around the holidays.

“Being able to put words on paper and give that to someone you care about goes a really long way,” said Gwen McCullough, direct services coordinator of DelcoCPR.

DelcoCPR has worked on other projects on behalf of the incarcerated and is lobbying for the deprivatization of the prison.

That goal is in reach. County Council is taking steps to return the prison to county control by the fall of 2021.
