A Moment in Wawa History: New Store’s Got a Drive-Thru

By

Customers couldn’t wait to try out Wawa’s first drive thru store in Westhampton, NJ, with some trying to go through the drive thru during the grand opening news conference, writes Stephanie Farr for  The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The new store is Wawa’s 35th this year and 917th in its total roster.

It wasn’t designated as a drive thru originally but when COVID-19 and quarantines hit in March, Wawa execs figured it was a good time to test the feature out.

“We had talked about a drive-thru for many years and we had worked on it, but it really just became the catalyst to accelerate this and bring it to market as quickly as possible,” said Terri Micklin, Wawa’s director of construction. “We quickly saw the need to reach our customers a little differently and give them a chance to experience Wawa while staying in their car.”

The drive-thru rotates between breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus, with limited options of items (and combos), based on the store’s most popular offerings.

Falls Township, Bucks County, gets a Wawa drive-thru in mid-January, this one without a walk-in store attached.

Wawa is planning five to 10 more drive-thru stores next year.
