Mercy Fitzgerald Nurses Plan Two-Day Strike Over Health Benefits, Staffing Shortages

A possible nurses strike is looming at Mercy Fitzgerald Medical Center in Darby and three other Philadelphia-area hospitals, writes John George for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The more than 2,500 nurses are seeking higher staffing levels.

Mercy Ftizgerald nurse, who have been working without a contract since Sept. 30, are also seeking better health benefits.

The nurses are represented by the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP).

Besides Mercy Fitzgerald,  affected hospitals are St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne; St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne; St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children and Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia.

More than 1,000 of the 2,500 nurses work at Mercy Fitzgerald and St. Mary are part of Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic.

The nurses say Trinity’s new contract proposal requires them  to pay up to $5,000 out of pocket for health care at their own hospitals.

They issued notices for a two-day strike Nov. 17 and 18.

Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic issued a statement regarding the proposed strike.

“Our teams remain fully committed to negotiating in good faith with union representatives in the spirit of obtaining fair, consistent and sustainable agreements, and we are confident we have been making progress toward resolution at both campuses,” read the statement.
