Dunwoody Village Resident Authors Humorous Poem About COVID-19 Cabin Fever
Dunwoody Village resident Francie Hubbard, like many of us, has had some extra time to herself this year, as the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing shutdown have forced most of society to spend more time indoors than usual.
A native of Kentucky who raised her four children with her husband in Rye, N.Y., the 80-year-old Hubbard took some of that time to write a humorous poem about … well … what else?
It’s titled “An Ode to COVID-19” and it ran in a recent edition of While We’re Waiting, a Dunwoody Village publication by residents, for residents:
Looked in the mirror and had a fright
Saw an image, an awful sight
Into the shower to wash my hair
Gel and curlers will help the scare
Am having a race to see who wins
Dog’s hair or mine, I think we’re twins
Locked in both day and night
Knock on the door is it dinner delight?
Could it be someone wanting to schmooze?
Must be time for a glass full of booze
TV programs fill the eve
Another day gone, can you believe?
And so my friends I bid good night
Another day, is the end in sight?
“I don’t really write poetry, but somehow it came to me,” said Hubbard, who has lived at the continuing care retirement community in Newtown Square for the last five years. “I guess your mind gets silly when you have to spend so much time inside. My husband helped me with the meter. I think it turned out OK.”
Before arriving at Dunwoody, Hubbard lived for a period of time in the Philadelphia area, so she could be near two of her daughters. She credits Dunwoody’s staff with doing a great job of keeping residents safe.
“They’ve been excellent,” Hubbard said.
To combat the cabin fever, she and her husband have been able to visit one of their daughters and her family in Lower Merion.
“We call them garden parties,” Hubbard said. “We stay socially distant: my husband and I on one side of the garden and my daughter and her family six feet away on the other side.”
