Malvern Man Receives High Honor from Harcum College

By

Malvern resident Dennis Marlo was recently awarded Harcum College’s 2020 Circle of Excellence Award by President Jon Jay DeTemple and his wife, Margaret DeTemple, during a virtual ceremony.

The Circle of Excellence is a prestigious giving society created to recognize individuals who have given $50,000 or more during their lifetime, as well as their time and talent, to Harcum College.

Marlo is a longstanding trustee, having served since 1994. He has held many leadership roles, including Chairman of the Board for several terms. He currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Audit Committee, and as a member of the Finance & Physical Plant and Trusteeship committees.

Marlo formerly served as the Chief Risk Management Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer, and President of the Pennsylvania Retail Banking Division of Sovereign Bancorp, Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Sovereign Bank, from 1998 to 2004. He also served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of ML Bancorp, Inc. and its wholly owned subsidiary, Main Line Bank, as well as Chief Financial Officer, from 1989 to 1998. Prior to his association with ML Bancorp, Inc., he was associated for 25 years with KPMG, LLP and predecessor firms, where he retired as a partner in the firm.

Marlo has been a driving force behind many Harcum College initiatives in the last several decades. He is an avid golfer and helped to establish its annual golf classic in 2000. In 2002, the outing was renamed the Kevin D. Marlo Golf Classic and dedicated to the memory of his son Kevin, who perished in the World Trade Center attacks in 2001.

Throughout the last 20 years, the event has grown into one of the college’s largest annual fundraising events. Now known as “Harcum College’s Kevin D. Marlo Golf & Tennis Classic and Online Auction,” the event includes something for everyone. Proceeds from this event benefit Harcum’s Kevin D. Marlo Scholarship. Since 2000, the event has raised more than $500,000 and has provided significant scholarship support to 65 talented students.

In 2015, Harcum celebrated its first 100 years. Marlo and his wife Karen served as Chairs for Harcum’s Centennial Gala. The gala attracted more than 200 Harcum friends, current and former Trustees, alumni, faculty, and other community members while creating nearly $80,000 in scholarship support through the Centennial Scholarship Fund.
