A summer enrichment program at Episcopal Academy, The Horizons at EA, did an end run around the pandemic this summer by renting a school bus a week before classes started in June, hand-delivering “Horizons at Home” boxes over two days to students,  writes Isabella Sanchez Castaneda for mainlinetoday.com.

“They were long days, about seven hours each, but seeing our students and families in person was an amazing experience,” says Courtney Delaney, Horizons at EA’s new executive director.

Horizons at EA provides academic opportunities for students from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

The academic summer programs are free, held at independent schools and colleges nationwide.

It launched in 2013, most recently partnering with the Ardmore Avenue Elementary School in Lansdowne.

About 100 students get to take classes, play games and interact with high school volunteers.

This year, campuses were closed, but Horizons provided lots of online learning and the delivered boxes had art supplies, books, KiwiCo STEM kits, yoga mats and an internet-enabled Kindle Fire.

Students accessed Zoom classes and used software for reading, math and science.

The program ended in July with gifts and a graduation parade past the students’ homes.
