Small College Campuses in Delaware County Able to Cope Better With Coronavirus Containment
For smaller Delaware County college campuses, creating a self-contained campus to curtail coronavirus spread is a little easier than larger colleges, writes Susan Snyder for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Haverford College, with its 1,022 students, has seven tents on campus for outdoor classrooms and gatherings. There are 13 trailers for isolation and quarantine, if needed.
Students have single rooms. Public on-campus bans are in place at Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges.
“We are as ready as we can be,” Haverford president Wendy Raymond said.
At Swarthmore College, students are told to stay away from borough stores and restaurants as it creates its own coronavirus-free bubble.
“We are making this difficult decision to ensure the safety of the on-campus community, as well as of residents of the borough and surrounding area,” wrote Swarthmore president Valerie Smith to residents.
It helps that less students are opting to be on campus. Both campuses offer in-person and remote study.
At Villanova’s larger campus, with its more than 6,000 students, containment is more difficult.
The Villanovan is reporting 15 students have tested positive for COVID-19. Nine live on campus. Six are non-residential.
Larger campuses have suddenly switched gears from on-campus to remote instruction after recent outbreaks.
