The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is building St. Joseph’s Place, an affordable senior housing community in Collingdale, writes Max Bennett for patch.com.

Construction is slated to start in the summer of 2021 at St. Joseph’s Parish.

The $18.5 million development will have 50 units of affordable housing.

It will be open to income eligible seniors 62 and older. Case management, health services, and recreational activities will be offered on site.

The project calls for rehabilitating the historic former Saint Joseph’s Elementary School and Annex and building a new addition to connect the two.

St. Joseph’s Place is the first senior housing community developed by Catholic Housing and Community Services outside Philadelphia.

“St. Joseph Place is a shining example of giving new life to church buildings that have served this community for decades,” said Huot. “These halls that once educated our children will now provide a safe, beautiful and affordable place for our seniors,” said executive director Heather Huot, in an Aug. 18 story from catholicphilly.com.

Helping the project along will be a tax credit allocation of $1.25 million for 10 years for a total of $12.5 million by the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency.
