Driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike is about to become significantly more expensive for some, as toll rates are set to increase by as much as 45 percent in 2021, writes David Murrell for the Philadelphia Magazine.

From next year, E-ZPass users will face the now-common six percent increase in Turnpike toll prices. But the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has also decided to hike prices for drivers who do not have the fast-lane system by a whopping 45 percent.

This refers to what was previously known as the cash rate. Now that cash is no longer being accepted on the Turnpike, the change that was already planned has been accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic.

This means that drivers without an E-ZPass will have to wait for their license plate to be photographed and then receive a bill in the mail.

According to the Commission, around 86 percent of all PA Turnpike users have an E-ZPass. The significantly higher rate for those without one “reflects the higher costs the Commission incurs to process the toll and collect payment,” said the Commission.
