Katelyn Melvin has always been comfortable around gardens. The 2008 graduate of Radnor High School would wander her Wayne garden where her parents and grandparents grew herbs and produce, writes Melissa Jacobs for Main Line Today.

Today, Melvin owns the 14-acre Tooth of the Lion Farm and Apothecary in Orwigsburg, with its four greenhouses and 200-year-old farmhouse.

The farm produces medicinal herbs, which Melvin sells through her website, as well as at farmers  markets in Bryn Mawr and Center City, and at Kimberton Whole Foods.

There’s anise hyssop, calendula, Echinacea, spilanthes, valerian and more.

Melvin turns the farm fresh herbs into teas, tonics, tinctures, topical creams and more.

“I grow what I love and what grows well on the farm,” she says. “I also grow what makes a difference for people.”

That can mean herbs for boosting the immune system, or helping with digestion or sleep.

“Herbs won’t fix your life,” Melvin says. “But herbs meet you where you are and encourage you to take care of yourself.”

As a single female farm owner, she’s a bit of an anomaly, but the locals are happy to see her farming the land.
